PREPARATION

Pack a bag for an unhurried day

Bring enough to be comfortable, and little enough to forget the weight.

Start with the route

Check the forecast and the length of the walk before choosing a bag. Water, a small snack, a light layer and any personal essentials are a useful starting point. Add a compact paper note with your destination and return options if you expect unreliable reception.

Give each item a place

Keep frequently used items near the opening. Put anything that must remain dry inside a separate pouch. A bag is easier to use when you can find a tissue or a ticket without emptying it on a crowded pavement. Test the loaded bag at home and adjust the straps before leaving.

Review what came back

When you return, empty the bag completely. Refill what you used, dry anything damp and remove what was unnecessary. Your own record of several ordinary days is a better packing guide than a universal list.
